Starting at number 5, we have Elevator mechanics.

The job description for Elevator mechanics includes installing and repairing elevators, escalators, moving walkways, and other types of lifts.

These mechanics follow a 4 year apprenticeship program, and during this apprenticeship you can expect to earn between $18 and $25 an hour.

Once you graduate to a journeyman / mechanic designation you can expect your salary to increase sharply.

This career is physically demanding, and is a good fit for you if you like to get paid while you exercise.

Elevator mechanics make the most on this list, and the median pay is almost $79,000 per year. It enjoys the best pay and benefits of the trade careers, and with job growth expected at 13% through 2024, it’s a good place to start this list.

4. Electrician

Coming in at number 4, Electricians.

Electricians install and maintain wiring and control and lighting systems. Other tasks are inspecting electrical components such as transformers and circuit breakers, and identifying electrical problems with a variety of testing devices.

Another trade career where you’re “earning while you’re learning”, electricians learn their skill by completing a 4 or 5 year paid apprenticeship.

This includes 144 hours of technical training, plus 2000 hours of paid on-the-job training each year.

The average apprentice electrician can expect to earn around $35,000 a year.

The median pay of an electrician is almost $58,000 per year, and job growth is predicted to be 14% through 2024.

3. HVACR Technician

At number 3 we have HVACR technicians.

These techs install, maintain, and repair heating, ventilation, air conditioning and refrigeration systems in homes and businesses.

There are 2 ways to enter the field:

One, you can attend a trade school for 6 months up to 2 years, based on the certification levels you need.

Or two, you can find an apprenticeship. These apprenticeships can be very competitive, but if you can get one you have your foot in the door of one of the fastest growing trade careers.

The median pay for an HVACR technician is almost $46,000 per year, and the job market is expected to continue to grow at 14% through 2024.

2. Industrial Maintenance Mechanic

Coming in at number 2 we have the Industrial Maintenance Mechanic, also refered to as maintenance machinists.

These mechanics ensure the operation of machinery and mechanical equipment such as engines, motors, pneumatic tools, conveyer systems, and production machines.

Following diagrams, operations manuals, and manufacturer’s instructions these technicians perform preventive maintenance as well as repair.

These techs often don’t need trade school or an apprenticeship. but are taught through on-the-job training. As you continue to grow in your career you can become certified or licensed, or pick up specialized training as you need it.

The median pay for an Industrial Maintenance Mechanic is almost $50,000 a year, and job growth is projected to continue at 16% for the next several years.

1. Wind Turbine Technician

This one requires nerves of steel, but if you want the job with the best growth prospects, and the best view too, you want to look into being a wind turbine technician.

Wind turbine technicians perform various tasks, like collecting turbine data for testing or research and analysis. They test and repair electrical components and systems and mechanical and hydraulic systems.

The educational requirements for this career are attendance at a 2 year technical school, plus one year of on-the-job training or an apprenticeship.

Since this is a very strenuous physical job, it’s best for someone who is in good physical condition, and you can’t be afraid of enclosed spaces or heights.

The median annual pay for wind turbine techs is almost $54,000, and it is predicted demand will continue to grow at 108% per year through 2024.
